The Online Specialization Problem

چکیده

We study the online specialization problem, where items arrive in an online fashion for processing by one of n different methods. Each method has two costs: a processing cost (paid once for each item processed), and a set-up cost (paid only once, on the method’s first use). There are n possible types of items; an item’s type determines the set of methods available to process it. Each method has a different degree of specialization. Highly specialized methods can process few item types while generic methods may process all item types. This is a generalization of ski-rental and closely related to the capital investment problem of Azar et al. (1999). We primarily study the case where method i + 1 is always more specialized than method i and the set-up cost for a more specialized method is always higher than that of a less specialized method. We describe an algorithm with competitive ratio O(logn), and also show an Ω(logn) lower bound on the competitive ratio for this problem; this shows our ratio is tight up to constant factors.

On the Specialization of Online Program Specializers

Program specializers improve the speed of programs by performing some of the programs' reductions at specialization time rather than at runtime. This specialization process can be time-consuming; one common technique for improving the speed of the specialization of a particular program is to specialize the specializer itself on that program, creating a custom specializer, or program generator, ...

Markov Chain Anticipation for the Online Traveling Salesman Problem by Simulated Annealing Algorithm

The arc costs are assumed to be online parameters of the network and decisions should be made while the costs of arcs are not known. The policies determine the permitted nodes and arcs to traverse and they are generally defined according to the departure nodes of the current policy nodes. In on-line created tours arc costs are not available for decision makers. The on-line traversed nodes are f...

Preliminary Report on a Self-Applicable Online Partial Evaluator for Flowchart

This is a preliminary report on a self-applicable online partial evaluator for a flowchart language with recursive calls. Self-application of the partial evaluator yields generating extensions that are as efficient as those reported in the literature for offline partial evaluation. This result is remarkable because partial evaluation folklore has indicated that online partial evaluation techniq...

Opportunities for Online Partial Evaluation

Partial evaluators can be separated into two classes: o ine specializers, which make all of their reduce/residualize decisions before specialization, and online specializers, which make such decisions during specialization. The choice of which method to use is driven by a tradeo between the e ciency of the specializer and the quality of the residual programs that it produces. Existing research ...

A Perfect Specialization Model for Gravity Equation in Bilateral Trade based on Production Structure

Although initially originated as a totally empirical relationship to explain the volume of trade between two partners, gravity equation has been the focus of several theoretic models that try to explain it. Specialization models are of great importance in providing a solid theoretic ground for gravity equation in bilateral trade. Some research papers try to improve specialization models by addi...
